Canada's Olympic Men's Hockey Team Revealed

The 2014 Winter Olympic Games are only one month away. On January 7, 2014, Canada's Olympic men's hockey team was revealed. It was only four years ago, on home soil, that our men's and women's hockey teams won gold and we're all hoping for a repeat of this next month in Sochi. Hockey has always been considered Canada's national pastime. Over the years, a number of Canadian kids' hockey books have been published. In honour of Canada's Olympic men's hockey team being revealed, celebrate in your classroom or library with a Canadian children's book.

Happy Hanukkah!

Known as the Festival of Lights and Feast of Dedication, Hanukkah is the eight-day Jewish holiday that commemorates the re-dedication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. Celebrated by the lighting of candles each night, it is traditionally a time for eating foods fried or baked in oil including latkes, donuts and other delicious items. This year, celebrate Hanukkah with a Canadian children's book.

Remembering John McCrae (1872-1918)

Canadian physician and Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae wrote the now famous poem In Flanders Fields – one of the most popular and most quoted poems from the war – while on the battlefield during WWI. The poppy has now become a symbol of remembrance most commonly worn in the weeks leading up to Remembrance Day. Saturday, November 30, 2013 marks the 141st anniversary of McCrae's birth. Children's author Linda Granfield will be at the Guelph Civic Museum this Saturday (Nov. 30, 2pm) sharing her detective work in her search to discover more about John McCrae.

Saturday, November 30, 2013 would have marked the 139th birthday of L.M. Montgomery, author of Anne of Green Gables. This Canadian classic has endured for over 100 years because of Anne. Montgomery’s Anne Shirley is absolutely endearing.

Pride Week (June 21-30, 2013)

Pride Week in Toronto is one of Canada's premier arts and cultural festivals and one of the largest Pride celebrations in the world. Several Canadian chidren's authors have written books for kids and young adults featuring LGBTQ characters. In some cases, the main characters are struggling with their own sexuality.
