D-Day: 70th Anniversary

June 6, 2014 marks the 70th anniversary of D-Day. On this day in 1944, thousands of Canadian soldiers landed on Juno Beach, launching the great campaign that would force the Nazis out of France and free the rest of Europe from the terror of Adolf Hitler. Hugh Brewster's On Juno Beach: Canada's D-Day Heroes (Scholastic Canada/Madison Press) contains unpublished accounts of D-Day eyewitnesses and participants, and through their eyes we are able to see what it was like to live through the assault on Hitler's Atlantic Wall and the massive invasion that followed.

June 4: Tiananmen Square massacre

June 4, 2014 marks the 25th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre. In 1989, the Chinese government deployed 200,000 troops to the square to suppress the peaceful pro-democracy protesters. Explore this story in William Bell's Forbidden City, a novel based on the events of the Tiananmen Square massacre.
